Hello everyone,

Mein Deutsch ist nicht gut, so dass ich geben auf Englisch hier, sorry dafür.

I just bought a 1992 Honda Del Sol tunning, it has got some noise in transmission, or gear box or belt .. I went to a car shop to check, They Said It was the Hauptwelle(main shaft) broken, and it cost a lot to repair ..

So I am seeking here first, a Used mainshaft, to offer me a good price.
Second, I am looking for a backyard mechanic, who has a garage or whatever, we can work together to repair the car. I would like to learn from you, and I can pay 25euro per hour Labor Cost. If you have ever repaired a Del Sol, please contract me. I live in Heidelberg, and I go to Frankfurt every weekend to my girlfriend.

My mobile: 0176/458 44014

Thanks very much.
Yours, Robin.

I haven't worked on del Sols much yet but on Civics, that's pretty much the same thing. I live a bit off the way though (64711 Erbach).. about an hour and a bit from either Heidelberg or Frankfurt. Actually the noise from your transmission might more likely only be the main shaft bearings or the clutch release bearing (buzzing sound?) - I guess that if the main shaft was broken your whole transmission wouldn't work anymore. If you have a D-series Engine you can just get a tranny for a few bucks (20-80€) and change the whole thing. Or you get the bearings (I don't know where besides the HONDA Dealer though) and open yours up to change them.

When does that noise happen? With or without the clutch depressed?

Hi,

Thanks very much for replying.

I think my motor is VTEC, is it D-series? Someone said I can buy a transmission from a S20 or S40 civic?

The noise is sort of a buzzing sound, it occurs when I release the clutch, in gear 1,2,3 and when I accelerate, and disappears when in gear 4,5(or because the exhaust is so loud that it overcomes the noise..)

One hour is not that far.. If it is ok, I can drive to your place whenever you have time..

Robin.

Hello Robin,

welcome to MaxRev.
Do you own the 125hp version (EH6, D-Series Engine) or the 160hp (EG2, B-Series Engine)? If you don't know, open your hood and check the label near the lock. You can find your serial number on that label. It starts with JHM..., followed by either EH6 or EG2 and some numbers. Now you know your version and your engine if it hasn't been swaped. If you're not sure about that, you can find the engine codehere! - little blue label on the bottom of that picture is the one with the serial, it's not exactly in the same spot on the Del Sol, but close.

I'd say it's the release bearing, mainly because it occurs when you release the clutch.
Both engines, D and B, are VTEC. If yours is a D (way more common) the Civic trannys work great. I'm no tranny expert but if I remember correctly the S20 is shorter, resulting in a better acceleration.

My advice is to get at least one more opinion about your problem from repair shops in Heidelberg. The more, the better. It's always hard to evaluate these "noise-causing-problems" over the internet. After that, we may know what you need to fix the problem.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Tomorrow I will go to another car shop to check the problem.
My del sol is 1.6 ESI, so I guess it's 125hp version.
I see you live in Damstadt, it would be wonderful if I could drop by this weekend.

Robin.

Should be no problem. But as I said, I'm no expert for trannies and engine stuff. I can't guarantee you if I will be able to tell you exactly what's wrong.
But as I said, the more opinions you get, the better.

When you go to another shop, tell them that you think it's the clutch release bearing. Always better for you if they think you have some knowledge regarding the problem. If you go there with no idea at all, they will most likely pick the most expensive solution...

Thanks, I will try to do another check tomorrow noon.
Also, I have a question about this spoiler on ebay Anzeige, currently I have this spoiler on my car, and the seller who sell me the car said it's not registered.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Heckspoiler-Alu-Universal-Schwarz-Honda-CRX-AS-ED9-EE8-Vtec-EG2-Targa-VTI-/151629951632?hash=item234dd97290 Anzeige

Do you think it can be registered?
And how about this one, the ebay seller said it's original? But I've seen a lot of del sols without spoiler.

Thanks for your quick reply.

The second one is the original VTI (EG2) Spoiler, so no registration is needed.

Getting yours, or the first one from Ebay Anzeige, registered is almost impossible in Germany. The german TÜV does not like wide metal spoilers with sharp edges because of the risk of injuries in case of an accident. Even if there's no accident, because of the size and the the sharp edges almost on height of the head, they are dangerous for pedestrians in everyday traffic. I'd recommend you switch to the VTI spoiler asap, because if the police stops you with your spoiler and they have a bad day, you have to remove the spoiler immediately or you won't be allowed to drive on. If they have a good day, you will be allowed to remove it and prove that to them within about 10 days. But the "bad day" case is more likely because it is a "Straßenverkehrsgefährdung" (danger for traffic). And you will have to pay a fee in either case.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.
The car shop I went today has made an appointment with TUV tomorrow afternoon, they will check for the spoiler. If they don't approve, I just get it down and run without spoiler, and resell it on ebay Anzeige, and I don't have to pay them for their checking, right?

Robin.

No, checking shouldn't cost you a dime. But just to be safe, ask them only for a free check if it can be registered... if you say you want it registered and the guy tells you that it's not possible they may charge you (unlikely, but possible).
